Rhino Orphan Weaning Process

January 28, 2021

Time flies

Amelia & Jessie has already started the long weaning process. With the girls just over a year old now, we carefully start dropping their milk intake, no more than half a litre per week. The entire process, with a 2 week pause in decreasing the volume every few weeks, can take anything between 6 and 9 months until the babies are fully weaned.

Of course little Mapimpi is in the mix and management has to consider that he is around 2 months behind the girls, because he is younger. Mapimpi can not be the only one drinking at feeding time as this results in fighting. He can also not start his weaning period too soon. So it takes careful and sensitive planning of milk schedules to prevent stress and jealousy amongst the rhino babies.
