The cheekiest, naughtiest rhino at the orphanage is celebrating his first birthday today. Mapimpi arrived last year, losing his mother to poachers at the tender age of just 7 days old.
It has been an adventurous year with this rhino bummie. Sleeping alongside him for the first 5.5 months was never boring for his carers, waking up at 1h30 in the morning for a 3am bottle, nudging crying and throwing food bowls. Taking him on bushwalks, witnessing him falling over his own feet and faceplanting (numerous times), seeing him learn to wallow, eat and use scratching posts. Meeting Kolisi, seeing him form a friendship with crashmate Jessie and getting into arguments with Amelia, falling head first into and aardvark burrow, completely stuck in the sand and those unforgettable zoomies. Memories none of his human moms will ever forget.
Now Mapimpi enters his weaning phase and if all goes well, he will be introduced to baby Annie in the coming weeks, giving her the comfort she now needs, just like he needed almost a year ago.
