The Rhino Orphanage – Global March for Elephants & Rhinos 2015

October 27, 2015

The Rhino Orphanage’s 2nd annual Global March for Elephants and Rhinos took place on Saturday 3rd of October at Legend Golf & Safari Resort in Limpopo, joining 135 other cities across six continents on the Global March for Elephants and Rhinos.

In such a remote location, over 70 marchers joined to raise awareness and to pressure governments to put more measures in place to stop the poaching of rhinos and elephants that is leaving them on the brink of extinction; with over 35,000 elephants and more than a 1000 rhinos killed each year to satisfy the demand of Asian markets, who use them on traditional medicine and as a status symbol. International guests, local staff, children and elders all marched with banners, drums and demands to raise their voice for the wildlife that has no voice, in the hope that our heritage will be protected.

The march concluded with a speech of Arrie van Deventer and a collection of videos of the baby rhinos which are being looked after at The Rhino Orphanage. The Rhino Orphanage is a registered non-profit company, founded by Arrie van Deventer in 2012. The orphanage is the first specialist, dedicated, non-commercial centre that cares for orphaned or injured baby rhinos with the only aim of releasing them back into the wild. It was created as the result of a lack of a specialized place for rearing baby rhinos left orphaned as a consequence of the current poaching crisis which feeds the illegal trade in horns.
